Label those glasses or Lose them!Recently, after traveling several thousand miles, a pair of glasses that had been lost for nearly two years, found their way back to their owner.Holidaying in Honolulu, the owner of the glasses left his hotel to take an Island tour. The glasses, in their case, fell from his pocket whilst he was walking to the Coach. The finder, a lady from Vancouver unsuccessfully tried to find the owner by visiting nearby hotels and shops. When she returned home she made contact with Australian authorities in Montreal to establish the address of the optometrist whose name appeared on the glasses case. In due course the glasses were forwarded to the optometrist with a note explaining the circumstances. As it was impossible to identify the owner, the optometrist arranged for a photograph of the glasses and details of the circumstances which had led to their return to be published in the local newspaper. Nothing further happened. The optometrist placed the newspaper report on the practice notice board. More than 12 months later the owner, who had been using a spare pair of glasses, returned for an examination and whilst in the Reception area read the article and claimed the glasses. Had the glasses or the glasses case contained some form of identification it would have been simple to return them to their owner 18 months earlier. Almost all eyeglass professionals have their details on the spectacle case, and glasses that are found often find their way back to the prescribing optometrist. Unless there is a name in the case or on the spectacles it is not always possible to identify the owner. You do not have to include your address and phone number, you can just have your name on or in the case or engraved on the glasses. When traveling losing a pair of glasses can be a serious matter. Here's a few tips... 1) Make sure to travel with an extra pair of glasses. 2) Make sure to identify your glasses with your name. I have stickers and cards available at my practice for you to identify your glasses. Phone or stop in and we will be happy to make them available to you. |
